The Month of May is Asian Heritage Month. This acknowledges the long and rich history of Asian Canadians and their contributions to Canada.

Canada's cultural diversity strengthens the country socially, politically and economically in innumerable ways. Asian Heritage Month is an ideal occasion for all to celebrate the beauty and wisdom of various Asian cultures.

Canadians are invited to take part in the festivities that commemorate the legacy of Asian Canadians and their many contributions which have helped Canada to become the multicultural and diverse nation it is today.

In Saskatchewan, Asian Heritage Month was commemorated at the Regina Multifaith Forum Dinner of Understanding and Recognition May 8, 2007.

April 8 to May 2, 2006

The recent works of Wee Lee are exhibited at the Assiniboia Art Gallery, 2429 11th Avenue, Regina. The Gallery is open Tuesday - Friday  10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday  from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wee Lee is an award winning nature artist and his technique combines Western realism with Oriental brushwork. Wee Lee studied Chinese brush painting at the Oriental Art School in Saigon before moving to Canada in 1978. Wee Lee is fascinated by all living creatures in the environment. His close-up, intimate paintings of nature capture the birds, flora and fauna of our local parks, wilderness refuges and even his own backyard.

In addition to his active exhibition record, Wee Lee has painted dioramas for the Royal Saskatchewan Museum and murals for the City of Moose Jaw and Duck Lake. His work is part of many public and private collections including, the Canadian Museum of Civilization, Saskatchewan Arts Board, City of Regina, Dofasco Canadian Collection, Ducks Unlimited, the University of South Dakota and SGI Canada to name a few. Asian Sport Education and Culture (ASEC) International will distribute resource materials to all Saskatchewan schools in May. The resource guides will help teachers plan Experience Asia learning opportunities. ASEC International is presenting several workshops about Asia at schools around Saskatchewan including Redvers, Saskatoon, Regina, Eyebrow and Christopher Lake. ASEC, based in Regina, is also presenting Sepak Takraw (Asian kick volleyball) at several conferences in May. Tuesday May 9, 2006 Dinner of Recognition and Understanding, 6 pm in Regina

The Regina Multifaith Forum is organizing this vegetarian and non vegetarian dinner of recognition and understanding. There will be live musical entertainment and an awards ceremony. Saturday, May 20, 2006 Varshik Bhojan, 6 pm in Regina

 

Varshik Bhojan, the Annual Fundraising Dinner of the Hindu Samaj of Southern Saskatchewan Inc. will be held at the Conesus Arts Centre, Regina. The event features divine East Indian Vegetarian Cuisine and Unique Entertainment. Hors d’oeuvres are served at 6 pm and dinner at 6:45 pm with entertainment to follow. Thursday, May 25, 2006 Menaka Thakkar Dance Company, 7:30 pm in Regina

New Dance Horizons and the India Canada Association present Menaka Thakkar Dance Company under the artistic direction of Menaka Thakkar. This original choreography features Bharatanatyam and Odissi dance styles. Chitra Warrior Princess, is a feminist retelling of an episode from the Mahabharata inspired by a play by Rabindranath Tagore. Parashakti Primordial Energy, is a hopeful dance about the cycle of Creation from pre-creation to birth to sustained energy to destruction and rebirth. The event will be held in the Shirley Bell Theatre, Connexus Arts Centre, Regina. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors (65 and older) and students. Sunday, May 28, 2006 Walk for Values, 3 pm to 6 pm in Regina

 

The Sri Sathya Sai Baba Organization in Canada, Regina Chapter, is organizing a Walk for Values from 3 pm to 6 pm in Regina. The walkathon does not require participants to pledge money for a cause but requests participants to pledge to practice at least one of the five basic human values in their lives throughout the year. According to the Sathya Sai Education in Human Values (SSEHV) Program, there are five basic Human Values that are universal and common to all of nations, cultures and religions. They are Truth, Right Conduct, Peace, Love and Non-Violence. The walk begins at the Science Centre and is three kilometers. The walk is open to everyone: youth, children and adults as individuals or as a family or a group representing a school, business, community or faith. Refreshments will be served at the end of the Walk. May 28th has been declared as Human Values Day in the City of Regina by the Mayor.
